Save Katherine Hall
(1 Picture)
Help us save Katherine Hall in Ware Shoals

Katherine Hall was built in 1913 by the founder of Riegel Mill, Benjamin DeWitt Riegel in honor of his daughter Katherine as a recreation and entertainment center for the community that developed around the Riegel Textile Mill at Ware Shoals. After the community incorporated in 1967, Katherine Hall  housed the town offices till its relocation to  Riegel Mill's “Company Store” located directly adjacent on Mill Street.   Katherine Hall, or, “The Y” as it has always been known by the locals who grew up in Ware Shoals, occupied a central role in the everyday life of the community. The interior has been altered slightly to accommodate changing uses, but it remains structurally intact and could be restored.

A group of citizens dedicated to Saving the Prosperity Depot just got one step closer to their goal. The National Trust has committed a matching $3,500 grant to the project. The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation applied for the grant on behalf of the group. Mike Bedenbaugh, the Palmetto Trust executive director and Prosperity native, explained that the $3,500 grant is a 50/50 matching grant and will not actually be awarded until the local Save the Prosperity Depot group raises the matching $3,500.

During late summer, the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation was selected from a national list of applicants to receive a $3,500 matching grant from the National Trust.  The funds are slated to be utilized in commissioning an engineering study to better understand the needs for rehabilitating and stabilizing the Dawkins House in Union, South Carolina.

The Lindler House
(68 Pictures)

When Mike Bedenbaugh discovered a pre-Revolutionary cabin hidden within the Lindler  House, which was set to be demolished to make way for a new Wal-Mart store in Ballentine, he knew the Trust needed to help save the historic treasure, else it be lost forever.

Through successful discussions with the family, the developers and the Wal-Mart corporation, the Trust secured the right to move the house to a safe parcel of ground just paces away from the family cemetery, and also secured the funding to do so quickly and carefully.  The Lindler House will be stabilized and  preserved by a new owner under protective covenants.
