For over 30 years, Cynthia Jenkins has dedicated her time and talent to the Palmetto State as a preservationist. During this time she’s worked throughout the Lowcountry in leadership positions at the Preservation Society of Charleston, Historic Beaufort Foundation and Lowcountry Council of Governments. She also served a stint in the Preservation Office in Tennessee broadening her knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act. Today, she serves as a board member to the Palmetto Trust, advising and supporting our mission across the state.
The lessons she shares from her experience are not only informative, but also paint a picture of what a lifetime of service has meant to the communities she has invested in.

Jim Bradford believes that historic preservation acts as a bridge between the past and the future. As the incoming president of the Palmetto Trust he plans to build more bridges for preservation throughout South Carolina, with a focus on engaging the Palmetto Trust’s board in becoming more deeply involved in efforts to build financial strength and regional memberships.

 Chip Helms Ernest “Chip” Helms developed a love of historic structures and archeology early in life on his grandparents’ farm in Mechanicsville, South Carolina. Weekend hunts for arrowheads and pottery, British coins, Colonial era ceramics and clay pipes took place in the shadow of a dilapidated plantation house on the property.
“After my grandmother's death, the farm was sold and the house and outbuildings taken down,” said Chip. “I hated to see the old house on my grandparents’ farm go, and watch as the same happened to so many other old houses in Mechanicsville. I guess that's why I feel compelled to try and save a few.”
Over the years, Chip’s interest in southern architecture has blossomed into a passion for saving old homes that often have little market value due to their advanced states of disrepair.

A trained architect and urban planner, Anderson has worked to revitalize downtowns, create affordable housing and expand economic opportunities in rural and metropolitan communities throughout the Palmetto State. He has spearheaded the development, construction and management of more than 40 real-estate developments and the rehabilitation of numerous National Register properties in South Carolina. His adaptive reuse practices have saved more than 100 historically significant buildings from demolition across the southeast.

The Palmetto Trust in partnership with the S.C. Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor announced the winners of the 15th Annual 2009 Historic Preservation Awards. Honorees represented some of the most significant preservation, rehabilitation, interpretation and restoration of architectural and cultural heritage that have taken place over the past year around the state. Award recipients were honored at the Annual Landmark and Preservation Conference at the Marriott in Columbia, South Carolina on March 26 and 27.
