S.C. State dorm built in 1917, once the pride of the school, gets new life
The State Nov. 30, 2008 By WAYNE WASHINGTON
ORANGEBURG — This is the story of a building, S.C. “Everybody’s just as excited as can be,” said S.C. State president George Cooper, whose office is within earshot of the work being done at Lowman Hall, the 24,000-square-foot building scheduled to reopen in September 2009.

Such a move would mean residents in the area could qualify for grant money as well as state and federal tax credits if they renovate their homes, Anderson City Planner Jeff Guilbault said. |

This story begins in the 1880s, when a two-story, wood-frame single house, like many others in the city, was built at 162 Spring St. But about 50 years ago, this house underwent a rather drastic conversion, at least on the first floor. The section closest to the street essentially was rebuilt entirely with a cruder but not completely inelegant concrete block and brick addition. |

The old West Union School received a new lease life Tuesday when Town Council voted 3-2 to give the West Union School Preservation Association a 50-year lease on the vacant building with certain stipulations. New West Union Town Council member Wanda Harden made the motion that was second by Ralph Smith, who in the past had voted with council members David Foulke and David Bryant to demolish the building owned by the town. Mayor Sharon Nunnery also voted for granting the lease, while Mr. Foulke and Mr. Bryant voted such an action. |
